A Comprehensive Approach to Employment
The Office of Career and Professional Development, in partnership with other departments and faculty throughout the School of Law, offers a comprehensive approach to employment to support you on your employment journey throughout all three years of law school, and beyond.
We work with you to create strong resume and other application materials, select and polish your writing sample, hone your interviewing skills and grow your professional network.
A Dedicated Career Counselor For Every Law Student
Each student is assigned a dedicated career counselor who will work with you throughout law school to help you achieve your professional goals. And after you graduate, the CPD staff will be there to support you and serve as a resource throughout your career.
First-year Employment Workshop Series
The employment workshop series includes informative, interactive and reflective exercises that are designed to assist students in developing their professional path early in their law school careers.
Workshop #2: Professional Communications
Learn how to communicate professionally throughout your employment search and avoid common pitfalls when interacting with potential employers.
Workshop #3: Setting Yourself Up for Success
Pause to reflect on your first semester of law school, while also learning strategies for landing and finding success in summer employment.
OCI Boot Camp
Each year, law firms and legal employers visit the law school for On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) events to interview potential candidates for summer and post-graduate employment.
The OCI Boot Camp is a series of four, 30-minute workshops that are open to all 1Ls who are interested in the OCI process and want to learn more about it. Even if you decide not to participate in OCI, these workshops provide helpful tools for any job search.
Online Career Tools
12twenty
12twenty is CPD’s online career portal just for St. Thomas Law students and alumni. Search job and internship opportunities, sign up for professional development and networking events and access our resource library.
J.D. Compass
J.D. Compass is an innovative initiative that pairs each recent graduate with a Career Strategist who, for one year after graduation, will individually support your unique employment journey and assist you as you study for the bar.
Your individual Career Strategist will:
- Recognize and evaluate diverse professional opportunities suited to your interests
- Help you develop resumes, cover letters and writing samples
- Identify job openings
- Provide feedback on job search strategy
- Support you through networking, and professional outreach and development
- Utilize social media for networking, job openings and personal brand development
- Review your electronic identity
- Perform mock interviews and provide guidance on interview strategies and techniques
Career Strategists work closely with the Career and Professional Development team to help every graduate of the School of Law find employment as quickly as possible following graduation

Job Board Reciprocity Policy
The Office of Career & Professional Development is pleased to offer reciprocal services to students and graduates whose law school also grants reciprocal privileges to students at the University of St. Thomas School of Law.
The following conditions apply:
- Reciprocity gives students and graduates from other law schools access to the St. Thomas Law Office of Career & Professional Development online job postings for 90 days (provided the school seeking reciprocity allows the University of St. Thomas School of Law students and graduates the same access.) The 90-day period begins when granted reciprocity.
- Email reciprocity requests to Katie Flood at katie.flood@stthomas.edu.
- Only University of St. Thomas School of Law students can participate in our on-campus interview or resume collections with employers.
- Reciprocity is only available to students and graduates whose law schools grant reciprocal privileges to students and graduates of the University of St. Thomas School of Law.
- Reciprocity is unavailable to students and graduates of the other law schools in Minnesota.
Students or graduates of other law schools may only have reciprocity at only one school in Minnesota at a time. - Reciprocity is granted on a case-by-case basis.
- The University of St. Thomas School of Law Director of Career & Professional Development has the discretion to deny services to individuals if they demonstrate inappropriate or hostile attitudes or behaviors.
