Research and Service Positions

Law School Student Employment in Research and Service

Student employment opportunities with the Holloran Center are guided by the mission of fostering student leadership and encouraging continuous, lifelong professional growth.

The Holloran Center offers several positions, which encompass:

  • Tourek-Marvin Peer Mentors (15-17 hired each year)
  • Tourek-Marvin Scholars (hired as needed by faculty)
  • Gherty Scholars (hired as needed by faculty)
  • Shea Scholars (hired as needed by faculty)

Compensation

Peer Mentors and Scholars are hourly student employees and typically work 1-3 hours per week. The compensation rate varies depending on the position.

Eligibility

Students enrolled full-time in the JD and LLM programs are eligible to apply for Scholar positions. Rising 2Ls and 3Ls are eligible to apply to become Peer Mentors.

Application Process

The Tourek-Marvin Peer Mentor application is open each spring for admission to the following academic year's cohort. Application materials will be made available here when applications are being accepted.

Scholars are selected by Holloran Center Directors on a rolling basis.

The Tourek-Marvin Peer Mentor Application for the 2026-2027 academic year is now open.

Rising 2Ls and 3Ls are encouraged to apply by the deadline of May 1, 2026.

To apply, please download and complete the application document on the right and send it to Felicia Bennett by email no later than 5 p.m. on May 1.

    Tourek-Marvin Peer Mentors are ambassadors charged with acclimating 1Ls to their new law school environment. Peer Mentors meet with 1Ls twice a semester as a group to cover important topics such as prioritizing wellness, becoming more self-directed, and reflecting on their identities as law students and future lawyers. They also hold 1-on-1s with their mentees to provide guidance on a variety of topics.

    Tourek-Marvin Scholars work on research projects that advance the mission of the Holloran Center and the national professional identity formation movement. Possible projects include:

    • Updating the Professional Development and Learning Outcomes databases
    • Writing reviews of law school prep books, with a focus on how they address professional identity formation
    • Researching trends around professional identity formation in legal education
    • Investigating professional identity formation offerings at legal conferences
    • Writing or soliciting content for the Holloran Center blog and social media accounts
    • Supporting Holloran Center events

    About the founding of the Tourek-Marvin program
    Steve Tourek Hank Shea Jack Gherty

    Steve Tourek

    Steve Tourek has worked with Marvin Windows for 45 years, serving 24 years as a founding attorney at Winthrop & Weinstine P.A and 21 years as in-house general counsel and senior VP. He has been speaking to the Ethical Leadership in Organizations course for 21 years and has been a mentor in the Mentor Externship program for 23 years. Tourek has long been aware of the challenges facing law students, and began his relationship with St. Thomas because he "wanted to work with students to better prepare them for the practice and lives of purpose and meaning as integrated human beings.”

    Jake Marvin, former CEO of Marvin Companies, established the Steve Tourek and Jake Marvin Scholars Endowment in 2024 in honor of his long-term employee's dedication to the professional formation of law students.

    Hank Shea

    Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Hank Shea joined the Law School in the fall 2006 semester as a Distinguished Senior Fellow with an additional appointment as a Fellow in the Thomas Holloran Center for Ethical Leadership in the Professions. Shea also serves as Professor of Practice at the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He donates his time in these roles.

    Shea has taught five courses, Crime & Punishment, White Collar Crime, Investigations, Ethical Leadership in Litigation, and Ethical Leadership in Social Justice. He also assists the Law School to realize the Holloran Center's mission to provide leading-edge interdisciplinary research, curriculum development, and programs that focus on forming students and practicing professionals into accomplished servant leaders in their communities. As part of that effort, Shea founded and is engaging in a unique collaboration with white-collar offenders, some of whom he prosecuted, to make joint ethics presentations about why they committed their crimes, and the consequences and lessons learned from their misconduct.

    Jack Gherty

    Jack Gherty devoted 35 years to cooperatives and agribusiness, 16 of which were as President and CEO of Land O' Lakes, Inc. Under his leadership, Land O' Lakes transformed from a regional to a national farmer-owned business and membership organization, giving producers a powerful presence in the marketplace and a strong voice in the policy arena.

    Gherty always emphasized the value of cooperatives in serving the needs of farmers and rural communities. He was an innovative leader who spearheaded a precedent-setting joint venture between Land O' Lakes and Cenex that established a new model for cooperative business activity. He also was a driving force behind the establishment of the Land O' Lakes Foundation, which serves rural communities, and the Land O' Lakes International Development Division, which provides humanitarian and economic development assistance on a global basis.

    An active volunteer, Gherty served on numerous special committees and boards within the cooperative community, including 16 years on the board of the Graduate Institute of Cooperative Leadership, which he helped build it into a preeminent educational program.
