Derek is the founder and former owner of Thooft Law where he practiced in the areas of civil litigation, criminal defense, personal injury, and expungement. His experience representing clients sharpened his advocacy, written communication, and perspective on law as a service profession. He mentors numerous students and receives ringing endorsements from his professional colleagues and protégés. Derek earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota. As a student here at St. Thomas Law, he participated in the legal clinic and moot court. He worked for the Minneapolis City Attorney's Office, the Ramsey County Public Defender's Office, and a St. Paul law firm. In his spare time, Derek enjoys traveling, cooking, sports, and the outdoors. He is excited to bring his experience, competencies, knowledge, and passion for the mission to the law school, and more specifically to the clinic.
